Dr Nicholas Fuggle is named winner of the ESCEO-IOF Pierre Meunier Young Scientist Award
Today, the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO) and the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) have awarded the 2022 ESCEO-IOF Pierre Meunier Young Scientist Award to UK researcher Dr Nicholas Fuggle MBBS BSc MRCP PGCert HBE.
The prestigious annual Award, presented at the virtual WCO-IOF-ESCEO 2022 Congress, recognizes young investigators in the field who have demonstrated outstanding scientific merit early in their careers.
Dr Fuggle is an National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Academic Clinical Lecturer at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Centre at the University of Southampton investigating the determinants of musculoskeletal ageing. He is the Lead of the Clinical Artificial Intelligence special interest group at the Alan Turing Institute, and Honorary Secretary of the International Society for Digital Health. Having completed his medical degree and intercalated BSc at Imperial College Dr Fuggle has held a research fellowship at St George’s University London, investigating the role of periodontitis in rheumatoid arthritis, and NIHR academic clinical fellowship in rheumatology at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Centre (University of Southampton), researching the epidemiology of musculoskeletal diseases of ageing within the Hertfordshire Cohort. Dr Fuggle is currently a member of the ESCEO Committee of Scientific Advisors and the Capture the Fracture Partnership® Policy Steering Committee. He is an editorial board member of the peer-reviewed journals Osteoporosis International, Calcified Tissue International, and Archives of Osteoporosis.

We are delighted to present this prestigious award to Dr Fuggle who has already made significant contributions to research in the fields of musculoskeletal ageing, sarcopenia, osteoporosis, epigenetics, and digital healthcare. We also thank him for his valuable support and commitment to advancing secondary fracture prevention through his role in the IOF Capture the Fracture® programme.”
