Prestigious annual award underlines the International Osteoporosis Foundation’s (IOF) mission to increase understanding and awareness of osteoporosis and to promote medical innovation in the field.
2020 IOF Medal of Achievement

The 2020 IOF Medal of Achievement was presented today to Dr Basel Masri at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis & Musculoskeletal Diseases (WCO-IOF-ESCEO 2020), being held online from August 20-22, 2020.

The IOF Medal of Achievement honours individuals who have significantly advanced the field of osteoporosis through their original and outstanding scientific contributions, and whose work has helped to increase understanding and awareness of osteoporosis. Candidates are nominated by members of IOF's Committee of Scientific Advisors (CSA) and the winner selected by the Chair of the CSA with the approval of the IOF Executive Committee.

In awarding the IOF Medal of Achievement, IOF President Professor Cyrus Cooper stated:

“I am honoured to present this Award to Dr Basel Masri, a respected colleague and dedicated, active member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation since 1998. Dr Masri has made major contributions to the understanding and management of osteoporosis and rheumatic disease in Jordan and throughout the Middle East region. His exemplary dedication to the field is reflected in his role as the founding president of the Jordanian Osteoporosis Society and co-founder of the Pan-Arab Osteoporosis Society. Importantly, he has played a pivotal role in developing the hip fracture registry and FRAX tool for Jordan, among many other achievements.” 

Dr Masri is currently Director of the Jordan Osteoporosis Center at Jordan Hospital in Amman. After training as a doctor at the University of Oran-Algeria, he completed post-graduate medical studies in France and worked in different French university and regional hospitals. He was Founding President of the Jordanian Osteoporosis Society (JOPS) in 1997 and Co-founder of the Pan-Arab Osteoporosis Society in 1998. He headed the First Jordanian Osteoporosis Record (2005) FiJoNOR and is co-author of the Jordanian Hip Fracture registry (FiJoHip) and Jordanian FRAX. His main areas of research are osteoporosis, clinical bone densitometry, and inflammatory joint diseases. Dr Masri is founding member of the Middle East Rheumatoid Arthritis Consortium (MERAC), which has recommendations for the management of rheumatoid arthritis in the Eastern Mediterranean region and other related papers. He is the Current President of the Jordanian Society of Rheumatology (JSR) and of the Arab League of Associations for Rheumatology (ArLAR). He is member of the Board of the IOF, and is the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) chair of the European, Middle Eastern and Africa panel. Dr Masri is member of the Administrative Council of the French Society of Rheumatology (SFR), and was President of the ArLAR Jordan 2020 Congress.
