Fundamentals of Osteoporosis

The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) is pleased to introduce its new training course, Fundamentals of Osteoporosis: Enhancing Clinical Excellence, offered globally in on-site/hybrid sessions organized by local host organizations.

Building on the successful model of the now-discontinued 'Osteoporosis Essentials' course series, the new IOF course offers an updated curriculum that combines current evidence with practical guidance to support clinical excellence. Participants will gain both theoretical insights and hands-on skills to strengthen their day-to-day practice.

Those who successfully complete the course and pass the online post-course examination will receive an Attestation of Achievement from IOF.  

About the Course Curriculum

The course curriculum comprises 13 modules, covering approximately 13 hours of lecture time over 1.5 days. Designed for healthcare professionals seeking in-depth training in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of osteoporosis, the curriculum covers the following topics:

  • Overview of Osteoporosis
  • Principles of bone densitometry for the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with osteoporosis
  • Clinical indications for bone densitometry and other imaging technologies
  • Laboratory assessments of bone health
  • Secondary osteoporosis
  • Clinical fracture risk estimation and monitoring
  • Non-pharmacological management: nutrition and post-fracture care
  • Pharmacological management: antiresorptive agents
  • Pharmacological management: bone forming agents
  • Pharmacological management: long-term and sequential therapies
  • Pharmacological management: rare adverse events of antiresorptive treatment
  • Clinical cases for discussion, part 1
  • Clinical cases for discussion, part 2

Apply to be a Local Course Organizer (LOC) 

IOF member organizations, medical societies, and universities (non-profit organizations) may submit applications to host the course locally, with lectures delivered by local experts. For-profit organizations that wish to provide training for staff or local healthcare professionals are requested to contact IOF for tailored options.
