The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) invites applications for the role of European Editor-in-Chief of Osteoporosis International. The appointment is commencing in Fall 2026. The application deadline is May 30, 2026. 

Osteoporosis International is a world-leading, peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary journal focused on the clinical management of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases. It is a joint initiative of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation (BHOF). With an impact factor exceeding 5.0, the journal serves as a global platform for the exchange of research and clinical insights related to the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and management of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone disorders. 

The position of Editor-in-Chief for the European Office also includes shared oversight of Archives of Osteoporosis, in collaboration with BHOF.

The position has no fixed time commitment, but is goal-driven and remunerated with an editorial stipend.

Responsibilities 

The Editor-in-Chief has strategic oversight of the journal and oversees the peer review process and content development, including the following: 

  • Selecting and supervising Editors and Editorial Review Board members.
  • Providing strategic direction for the journal and its content by identifying emerging areas of importance and soliciting papers for submission.
  • Directing the review process to ensure timely and efficient handling of manuscripts. 

Selection Criteria 

Successful applicants will demonstrate the following attributes: 

  • Be an internationally leading and highly distinguished member of the bone research community with a world-class track record of academic/clinical leadership, research, and publication.
  • Possess and articulate a strategic vision for maintaining and developing an internationally competitive journal and be committed to its continued improvement.
  • Have strong organizational and managerial skills, including everyday tasks of editing (review process, overseeing production, managing budgets and workflow, collaborating with Associate Editors and staff, delegating responsibilities as appropriate, and communicating effectively with authors, reviewers, the IOF Executive Committee, as well as the North American Editor-in-Chief for the journal.
  • Familiarity with academic editing, such as prior editorial service for a journal, guest editing of a special issue, or editing scholarly volumes.
  • Have a working knowledge of the process of managing the operation of a scientific journal and have prior service on one or more editorial boards or equivalent.
  • Able to commit the required time to undertake the role.
  • Residence in Europe.
  • Have ideally previously served as Editor in Chief or Deputy Editor of a Journal focused on musculoskeletal health.

The statement should set forth your goals and plans for the content and reach of the Journal and how you would operationalize your plan. In addition, it should describe your approach to ensure diversity and inclusion of potential candidates for Associate Editor and Editorial Board positions.
  • CV or Resume specifically including your leadership and publication experience, your current affiliations, any disclosures which might be perceived as potential conflicts-of-interest, and your current contact information.
