The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) announces the launch of the IOF Course on Pediatric Bone Health, the first Spanish-language educational programme available on the IOF Academy platform. Designed by experts from Latin America with extensive experience in pediatric bone health, this new online course offers comprehensive, up-to-date training for healthcare professionals interested in the prevention, assessment, and management of bone diseases in children and adolescents.

Bone health is established from the earliest stages of life. Proper skeletal development during childhood and adolescence is essential for achieving optimal bone mass and helping to prevent osteoporosis and fragility fractures in adulthood.
With a total duration of 19 academic hours spread across 10 modules, the course provides an update based on the latest scientific evidence and allows participants to progress at their own pace through a 100% online and on-demand format. The course is intended for pediatricians, pediatric endocrinologists, pediatric rheumatologists, specialists in bone metabolism, nutritionists, physical therapists, and other professionals involved in the care of children and adolescents.
Participants will be able to:
- Understand the development and physiology of the skeletal system during childhood and adolescence
- Recognize the most relevant risk factors for the onset of pediatric bone diseases
- Identify clinical signs and available diagnostic tools
- Update their knowledge on common bone diseases in children and adolescents
- Incorporate an interdisciplinary approach to managing bone diseases
- Apply updated criteria for the prevention of bone diseases in childhood and adolescence
- Assess the role of nutrition and physical exercise in optimal bone mass development
- Manage pediatric clinical cases involving bone disorders
- Understand international clinical recommendations and best practices
Participants who successfully complete all assessments will receive a certificate of completion. The ability to apply for credits toward professional certification or recertification will depend on the regulations, requirements, and accreditation systems in effect in each country.
This new Course reflects IOF’s commitment to improving patient care in Latin America by promoting access to up-to-date knowledge that contributes to earlier detection, better clinical decision-making, and improved bone health outcomes for children and adolescents.
Dr. Fidencio Cons Molina, a member of the IOF Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and scientific coordinator of the course, noted: "Bone health is built up over the course of a lifetime, but its foundations are laid during childhood and adolescence. Understanding how the skeleton develops during these stages is essential for promoting better musculoskeletal health in the future.”
From her perspective as a pediatrician and scientific coordinator of the course, Dr. Desirée López Gonzáles, added: “This course brings together the expertise of Latin American specialists and covers topics ranging from normal bone development to the diagnosis and management of pediatric bone disorders. Our goal is to offer pediatricians and other healthcare professionals a practical and up-to-date resource that allows them to incorporate this knowledge into their daily practice.”
