Celebrating the success of the 9th Asia-Pacific Bone Health Conference in Tokyo
The IOF 9th Asia-Pacific Bone Health Conference concluded successfully in Tokyo, Japan on December 13th, exceeding expectations with 538 delegates (including 33 virtual participants) at the dynamic and engaging three-day event.
Held from 11–13 December 2025, the conference offered a comprehensive scientific program, including oral and poster presentations, plenary sessions, and joint sessions with leading regional and international organizations. Key topics spanned fracture risk assessment, rare bone disorders, nutrition, exercise, and innovative technologies in bone health.
Dr. Philippe Halbout, IOF CEO, stated: “We are delighted by the success of the 9th Asia-Pacific Bone Health Conference. This event marked an important milestone for scientific exchange, networking, and advancing education across the region, underscoring IOF’s commitment to reducing the burden of osteoporosis and promoting collaboration throughout the Asia-Pacific.”
In their welcome message, Conference Co-Chairs Professor Nicholas Harvey (IOF President) and Professor Atsushi Suzuki (IOF Board member) underlined IOF’s appreciation for the collaboration of partner societies, which enriched the program with diverse regional perspectives. These partners included the Asian Pacific Consortium on Osteoporosis (APCO), the Japan Osteoporosis Society (JOS), the Japanese Osteoporosis Foundation (JOF), the Japanese Society of Bone & Mineral Research (JSBMR), the Korean Society of Bone & Mineral Research (KSBMR), the Korean Society of Osteoporosis (KSO), and the Fragility Fracture Network Japan (FFN-J). The European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO) also co-hosted a special session, broadening the conference’s global perspective.
The conference also marked the launch of the APCO-IOF Asia-Pacific Regional Audit 2025, a new report providing critical data from 22 countries and regions to guide osteoporosis prevention, management, and policy development. View press release.
Pre-conference events set the tone for engagement and knowledge-sharing. IOF hosted a Fundamentals of Osteoporosis training course for Japanese healthcare professionals, attracting close to 70 participants. The Capture the Fracture® (CTF) Workshop drew 76 participants, including Osteoporosis Liaison Services (OLS) and Fracture Liaison Services (FLS) coordinators nationwide. Moderated by Professor Atushi Suzuki, the workshop featured expert speakers Professors Satoshi Ikeda, Takeshi Sawaguchi, Hiroki Yasuoka, Masahiro Tanaka, Naohide Takigawa, and Noriaki Yamamoto. The collaborative atmosphere and strong engagement underscored Japan’s exemplary role in harmonizing and advancing OLS/FLS programs and collaboration with national health policy decision-makers.
The Conference also recognized outstanding contributions from Capture the Fracture FLS mentors across the Asia-Pacific region. Awards were presented to Prof. Atsushi Suzuki, Prof. Hiroshi Hagino, Dr. Satoshi Ikeda, Dr. Naohide Takigawa, Dr. Hiroki Yasuoka, Dr. Masahiro Tanaka, Prof. Noriaki Yamamoto, Prof. Yong-Han Cha, Dr. Sung Hye Kong, Prof. Yoon-Sok Chung, and Dr. Derrick Chan for their dedication to advancing secondary fracture prevention and FLS development.
Another highlight was the presentation of an Award to Professor Manju Chandran, IOF Board Member and APCO Chairperson. She received the Outstanding Achievements in Bone Health in the Asia Pacific Region Award in recognition of her remarkable and longstanding contributions to improving bone health and patient care in the region. The Best Oral Communication Award went to Dr. Y.-C. Ha (South Korea) for the abstract “Long-Term Trends of Distal Radius Fractures in Adults Aged ≥50 Years in South Korea Using a Nationwide Claims Database (2006–2022)”, one of many high-quality research presentations at the conference.
IOF CEO Philippe Halbout extended special thanks to the co-chairs, Professors Harvey and Suzuki. He especially noted that the success of the Conference and the Capture the Fracture® workshop could not have been possible without Professor Suzuki’s dedication and extraordinary commitment. He added: “We sincerely thank all speakers, delegates, and partners who contributed to the success of the conference. Your engagement and collaboration were essential in making this event a milestone for advancing bone health in the Asia-Pacific region, and we look forward to continuing our shared efforts to reduce the burden of osteoporosis.”
