The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) has presented the prestigious IOF President’s Award to Dr Thierry Chevalley, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva, Switzerland.
The IOF President’s Award recognises individuals who have made a significant and longstanding contribution to advancing the work of the Foundation and its mission to improve bone, muscle and joint health worldwide.
The award was presented by Professor Nicholas Harvey, IOF President, at the Opening Session of the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (WCO‑IOF‑ESCEO 2026) in Prague, Czech Republic, on April 16, 2026.
Professor Harvey stated: “It is a great pleasure to present the IOF President’s Award to my distinguished colleague Thierry Chevalley. Over many years he has provided outstanding support to IOF initiatives, including through his leadership as Vice-Chair of the Capture the Fracture® programme governance. His many contributions to the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors and across our science programmes have been invaluable to the Foundation.”
Professor Chevalley is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva, with longstanding expertise in geriatrics and bone health. He earned his medical degree from the University of Lausanne and completed a doctorate at the University of Geneva, focusing on the effects of calcium supplementation on bone density and fracture risk in older adults.
Following postdoctoral research at Loma Linda University in California, he joined the Geneva University Hospitals, where he has held several roles including Head of the Geriatrics Liaison Unit and Consulting Physician in Bone Diseases.
An internationally recognised authority on osteoporosis and fracture prevention, Professor Chevalley serves on the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors and the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis (ESCEO). He is Vice-Chair of the governance of IOF’s Capture the Fracture® programme and a committee member of the Swiss Association Against Osteoporosis (ASCO), where he leads efforts to advance the development of fracture liaison services in Switzerland. He is Associate Editor of Osteoporosis International and Archives of Osteoporosis, and has published widely with more than 8,000 citations. His research interests span fracture liaison services, bone health across the lifespan, and the interplay of nutrition, growth, and ageing in skeletal health.
