Osteoporosis Canada shines a light on bone health during Osteoporosis Awareness Month
November marks Osteoporosis Awareness Month in Canada, and Osteoporosis Canada — a member society of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) — is calling on Canadians to take action for their bone health.
Osteoporosis is often called the “silent thief,” weakening bones over time and increasing the risk of fractures that can have life-altering consequences. Fractures from osteoporosis are more common than heart attack, stroke, and breast cancer combined, yet fewer than 20% of Canadians who experience a fracture are properly diagnosed or treated for the disease.
Throughout November, Osteoporosis Canada is sharing information, tools, and resources to help Canadians understand their risk factors and take preventive steps. The organization continues to expand its evidence-based education and community outreach, aiming to make reliable, accessible programs available nationwide. Its mission is clear: to help make Canadians unbreakable.
As part of the month’s awareness activities, landmarks across the country will light up in purple on November 29, symbolizing support for those affected by osteoporosis and the collective effort to promote bone health. Confirmed participating landmarks include:
BC Legislature – Victoria, BC
Science World – Vancouver, BC
Telus Spark Science Centre – Calgary, AB
Lethbridge City Hall – Lethbridge, AB
City Hall – Red Deer, AB
City Hall and Prairie Wind Monument – Saskatoon, SK
Esplanade Riel and the Winnipeg Sign – Winnipeg, MB
City Hall Clock Tower – Brampton, ON
Vaughan City Hall – Vaughan, ON
With over 2.3 million Canadians living with osteoporosis, Osteoporosis Canada encourages everyone to “shine a light” on the disease this November and take steps toward stronger bones and a healthier future.
