Fleisch ESCEO-IOF Medal to Dr Stefania Maggi, Research Director at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) Aging Branch-Institute of Neuroscience in Padua and Director of the CNR Project on Ageing. The Award was presented at the opening of the virtual congress WCO-IOF-ESCEO 2020.
The Herbert A. Fleisch ESCEO-IOF Medal recognizes a researcher who has made outstanding and ground-breaking achievements in basic bone science or musculoskeletal research. It is named after the late Professor Herbert Fleisch, whose pioneering work contributed to the development of the field of scientific knowledge about metabolic bone diseases and their treatment.
Professor Jean-Yves Reginster, ESCEO President and Co-Chair of WCO-IOF-ESCEO 2020 noted:

Dr Maggi is a geriatrician and epidemiologist with expertise in both areas of Clinical Geriatrics and Epidemiology of Ageing. Her research focuses on the epidemiology of ageing and on the analysis of the impact that lifelong health promotion and disease prevention programs have on healthy ageing. She is a Board-Certified Geriatrician (University of Padua, Italy) and also obtained a Master in Public Health in Epidemiology in 1987 and completed a two-year Post-Doctoral Training in Epidemiology, both at the Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, MD, USA. Dr Maggi was the Coordinator of the Program for Research on Ageing of WHO, from 1990 to 1993, based at NIA, NIH, Bethesda, MD, USA.
In 2016-2017 she was the President of the European Geriatric Medicine Society (EuGMS), after four years as Director of the Academic Board. Dr Maggi is currently working as Research Director at the CNR Aging Branch-Institute of Neuroscience in Padua and is the Director of the CNR Project on Ageing, involving 22 multidisciplinary, research centers in Italy. She is a member of the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors and of the Scientific Advisory Board of ESCEO, as well as member of several working groups of IOF, ESCEO, and EuGMS. She is currently the President of the Mediterranean Diet Foundation, a member of the Board of Directors of the American Federation for Aging (AFAR), New York, NY, US and of the Italian Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics (SIGG).
