Calcified Tissue International New Editors-in-Chief

The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) announces an important editorial transition for Calcified Tissue International and Musculoskeletal Research. Effective 1 September 2026, Professor René Rizzoli will step down from his role as Editor-in-Chief, and Professors Etienne Cavalier and Roland Chapurlat will assume leadership of the journal as Co-Editors-in-Chief.

Professor Roland Chapurlat is an internationally recognised expert in rheumatology and bone diseases. In addition to his role as Chief of the Division of Rheumatology and Bone Diseases at Hôpital Édouard Herriot in Lyon, France, he is the Chief of the National Reference Centre for Fibrous Dysplasia of Bone since 2006 and, since 2021, Director of INSERM UMR 1033, a research unit dedicated to the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of musculoskeletal diseases. His research focuses on the pathophysiology, imaging, and treatment of bone and joint disorders, including fibrous dysplasia and McCune–Albright syndrome. He has authored more than 440 peer-reviewed publications. Professor Chapurlat is a member of the scientific committees of the International Osteoporosis Foundation as well as the Groupe de Recherche et d'Information sur les Ostéoporoses (GRIO). He has extensive editorial experience as the Associate Editor of Calcified Tissue International since 2025, and through his work on the editorial boards of Bone, and Joint Bone Spine

Professor Etienne Cavalier is Professor of Clinical Chemistry at the University of Liège and Head of the Department of Clinical Chemistry of the University Hospital of Liège (CHU de Liège). His current research topics are bone markers, vitamin D, PTH, vascular calcification markers, renal function (estimation, biomarkers), markers of frailty and sarcopenia, LC-MS/MS methods for steroids, and peptides quantification. He is the President of the Royal Belgian Society of Laboratory Medicine and the Chairman of the IFCC-IOF Committee on Bone Metabolism.  He is member of the scientific advisory committees of IOF and ESCEO as well as member of various societies of clinical chemistry, nephrology and endocrinology. Professor Cavalier has published more than 460 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and is author of eight books or book chapters.

Together, Professors Cavalier and Chapurlat bring complementary expertise spanning laboratory science, translational research and clinical investigation. As Co-Editors-in-Chief, they will work closely with Professor Roger A. Fielding, Musculoskeletal Research Section Editor, as well as reviewers and publishers, to build on the journal’s strong foundations and further enhance its role as a trusted platform for impactful research across the musculoskeletal field. Professor Atsushi Suzuki will join the editorial team as Associate Editor, where he will contribute his extensive expertise in clinical and preclinical research.

Honouring Professor René Rizzoli’s editorial leadership

Professor Rizzoli’s tenure as Editor-in-Chief has been marked by a strong commitment to scientific quality, editorial rigour and the advancement of research in osteoporosis, mineral metabolism and musculoskeletal health. In 2025, under his leadership, Calcified Tissue International was ranked in the top 15% (of over 3100 Springer Nature journals) for editorial excellence.
