IOF appoints new Editor-in-Chief for the European office of Osteoporosis International
The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor René Rizzoli as the next Editor-in-Chief for the European Office of Osteoporosis International and Archives of Osteoporosis, effective 1 September 2026.
Professor René Rizzoli, MD, is an internist and endocrinologist with subspecialty expertise in metabolic bone diseases, osteoporosis, and disorders of mineral metabolism. He is Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University Hospitals of Geneva, former Head of the Service of Bone Diseases and former Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation and Geriatrics. Professor Rizzoli previously served as Chair of the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors and currently chairs the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO).
As former Editor-in-Chief of Calcified Tissue International, former editor of BONE and as Associate Editor of Osteoporosis International, Professor Rizzoli brings extensive editorial experience to the role, along with a longstanding commitment to scientific excellence and a strong vision for the journal’s future.
As Editor-in-Chief of the European office of Osteoporosis International, Professor Rizzoli will work closely with the US Editor-in-Chief (appointed by the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation), the Editorial Board, authors, reviewers, and IOF.
Commenting on his appointment, Professor Rizzoli said: “I am honoured by the opportunity to serve as Editor-in-Chief of Osteoporosis International. I look forward to building on the journal’s strong reputation as one of the world's foremost publications in osteoporosis and metabolic bone diseases. Through the publication of rigorous, impactful, peer-reviewed research, the journal will continue to advance scientific knowledge, inform clinical practice, and improve musculoskeletal health worldwide.”

Professor Rizzoli succeeds Professor John A. Kanis, who has served as Editor-in-Chief for the European Office since 2008. Over the past 18 years, Professor Kanis has played a pivotal role in the journal’s growth and evolution. Under his leadership, Osteoporosis International strengthened its international standing, attracted outstanding research from around the world, and further established its reputation as one of the leading journals in osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. His vision, dedication, and commitment to scientific excellence have left a lasting legacy.

An international multi-disciplinary journal which is a joint initiative between the International Osteoporosis Foundation and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA, Osteoporosis International provides a forum for the communication and exchange of current ideas concerning the diagnosis, prevention, treatment and management of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases.
