The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) is pleased to endorse the A:CARE programme, a behavioural science-based initiative by Abbott designed to improve medication adherence in chronic disease management, including osteoporosis.
Poor adherence to osteoporosis treatment is a major global problem: around 20–30% of patients never even start their prescribed oral bisphosphonate treatment. And among those who do, about 40% stop within the first year, thereby vastly increasing their risk of suffering fragility fractures.
The A:CARE initiative is an important step toward improving patient outcomes and reducing fracture risk. Using the latest techniques in behavioral science and evidence-based digital solutions, A:CARE aims to transform care and advance health equity through education, insight and coaching:
- Recognizing the challenges of non-adherence
- Improving medication adherence by understanding its drivers
- Changing mindsets from “treating diseases” to “treating people”
IOF supports the programme’s focus on long-term engagement and its alignment with IOF’s educational mission and focus on closing the adherence gap in osteoporosis.
