The IOF, together with APCO and ESCEO, was honoured to participate in the recent Bone and Muscle Health 2025 Conference in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, hosted by the Монголын Наран нийгэмлэг / Mongolian Naran Society, together with the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences (MNUMS), the National Trauma and Orthopedic Research Center, the National Center for Maternal and Child Health, and ‘Suu’ Joint Stock Company (JSC).
Organized for the first time in Mongolia, the ‘Bone and Muscle Health 2025’ international scientific conference was sponsored by ‘Suu’ JSC, which has brought the issue of Mongolian musculoskeletal health to the attention of the international scientific community. Topics presented included ‘Milk and Dairy Products and Bone Health,’ ‘Diabetes and Its Correlation with Bone Fractures,’ ‘Active Movement and Sarcopenia,’ ‘Addressing the Treatment Gap in Osteoporosis,’ ‘Traditional Dairy Consumption and Its Relation to Osteoporosis,’ ‘FRAX-Based Assessment of Fracture Risk in Mongolians Aged 40 and Over,’ ‘Knowledge of Osteoporosis Among Diabetic Patients,’ and ‘Effects of Innovative Preparations on Bone Healing'.
Osteoporosis and fracture rates are rising in Mongolia, yet access to health education, research, diagnosis, and treatment remains limited. The discussions are expected to help reduce risks of falls and fractures that affect thousands of citizens annually, strengthen preventive measures, and expand Mongolia’s participation in global research and treatment efforts.
Dr. Amarsaihan Dashtseren, Department of Preventive Medicine, School of Public Health, MNUMS, emphasized the importance of the meeting: “...The purpose of today’s conference is to discuss what should be done to have strong bones and how this is linked with the food we consume. Currently, we only provide statistics on trauma, but data on osteoporosis remain very scarce. For that reason, there has arisen an urgent need to study the issues leading to bone fractures. It has been reported that about 55 million people in the world suffer fractures due to osteoporosis. In Mongolia as well, the incidence rate has steadily increased since 2020. Most importantly, the question is how to prevent it. That is why we have invited international experts to our country, in order to study and learn from global experience and are holding today’s meeting....”
This conference provided a valuable platform for sharing international best practices and discussing the latest treatment options to enhance bone and muscle health. We are proud to contribute to advancing knowledge and fostering collaboration to support better outcomes for patients in Mongolia and beyond.
