The 2024 International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) Olof Johnell Science Award has been presented to Professor Etienne Cavalier, Professor of Clinical Chemistry at the University of Liège and Head of the Department of Clinical Chemistry of the University Hospital of Liège (CHU de Liège). It was presented on April 13th during the IOF-ESCEO World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases, which took place in London, UK.

The prestigious Award is named after the late Professor Olof Johnell, a renowned investigator whose legacy includes major contributions to the field including in epidemiologic research, guideline development and policy. Presented annually, the Award recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of osteoporosis in a scientific or policy implementation area worldwide.

Professor Eugene McCloskey, Chairman of the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors, stated: “On behalf of IOF, I am delighted to present this notable Award to Etienne Cavalier, an internationally recognized expert in the field of clinical chemistry. We are greatly honoured to count Professor Cavalier as a valued member of the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors, and thank him for his longstanding commitment and leadership as Chairman of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) Committee on Bone Metabolism (C-BM), in collaboration with IOF. The publications of this expert working group have been very influential in furthering knowledge of, and providing guidance for, the use of bone markers in osteoporosis.”

Etienne Cavalier is currently Professor of Clinical Chemistry at the University of Liège and Head of the Department of Clinical Chemistry of the University Hospital of Liège (CHU de Liège). His current research topics are bone markers, vitamin D, PTH, vascular calcification markers, renal function (estimation, biomarkers), markers of frailty and sarcopenia, LC-MS/MS methods for steroids, and peptides quantification. Etienne Cavalier is the current President of the Royal Belgian Society of Laboratory Medicine and is the Chairman of the IFCC-IOF Committee on Bone Metabolism.  He is also member of the Board of the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO) and of the Belgian Bone Club.
