Society for Osteoporosis of the Federation of Bosnia & Herzegovina Symposium in Sarajevo is major success
Organised by the Society for Osteoporosis in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a symposium with international participation titled 'Modern Approaches to the Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis' was held at Hotel Hills Sarajevo from 13-14 December 2025. The Symposium was endorsed and supported by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), the world's largest global NGO dedicated to osteoporosis and related musculoskeletal diseases.
The members of the Society for Osteoporosis in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, experts from the Clinical Centre of the University of Sarajevo, General Hospital 'Prim. Dr Abdulah Nakaš', and the Community Health Center of Sarajevo Canton participated in this significant scientific and professional event. Colleagues from Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Canada, Switzerland, representatives of the International Osteoporosis Foundation, as well as representatives of the academic community (professors from the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, as well as representatives from the University of Sarajevo Rectorate) participated with their work and constructive discussion.
The President of the Committee of National Societies of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), Dr Famida Jiwa, participated in a lecture titled "Osteoporosis - the vision of the International Osteoporosis Foundation". The President of the Society for Osteoporosis in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Prof. Dr Aida Hasanović, a full professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sarajevo, and a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation, highlighted the importance of holding the Symposium in her lecture "Global perspective and local challenges in the fight against osteoporosis".
In her keynote lecture, Prof. Hasanović highlighted: "Osteoporosis is a disease that knows no borders. It is a global challenge, a silent epidemic affecting millions of people worldwide. Bringing together experts from different countries, disciplines, and experiences, this symposium shows that our common mission is strong and that we are united by one idea – bone health and a better life for our patients. The growing number of patients in every country reminds us that prevention, early diagnosis and access to therapy are crucial, not only for the individual but also for society as a whole. Osteoporosis is not just a medical problem, it is a social challenge. Therefore, it is our responsibility to work together, to combine knowledge and experience, and to demonstrate that through joint efforts we can reduce the burden of the disease and improve the quality of life for millions of people. I want this symposium to be an inspiration to all of us. To remind us that every idea, every research and every collaboration can be a step closer to a world where osteoporosis is no longer a silent threat, but a disease that we know how to prevent, recognise and control”.
IOF warmly congratulates the Society in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the organization of this successful symposium!
