WHAT IS OSTEOPOROSIS?
Osteoporosis is a disease which makes bones weak and fragile. This greatly increases the risk of breaking a bone even after a minor fall or bump. The disease has no obvious symptoms, so many people don’t know they have osteoporosis until they suffer a fracture. Fractures can be life-altering, causing pain, disability and loss of independence. That’s why it’s important to prevent osteoporosis!

Build Better Bones website
IOF has launched a new platform primarily designed for people with osteoporosis and their caregivers. It provides easy-to-follow information and animated videos of targeted exercises, tips on how to falls-proof the home, and guidance on bone-healthy nutrition. With its unique caregivers section, Build Better Bones aims to help people living with osteoporosis take charge of their bone health.
With FRAXplus® clinicians can now further refine FRAX® risk prediction and optimize the identification of those at highest fracture risk. FRAXplus® illustrates how fragility fracture risk probabilities can be modified for recency of prior fracture, exposure to higher dose oral glucocorticoids, duration of Type 2 diabetes mellitus, Trabecular Bone Score, recent falls history, lumbar spine BMD and Hip axis length.
The Scorecard for Osteoporosis in Europe (SCOPE) aims to raise awareness of osteoporosis care in Europe and permits an in-depth comparison of the quality of care of osteoporosis across the region.
It shows that osteoporosis is a major health care burden, resulting in enormous, and growing, costs to national health care systems.
OSTEOPOROSIS & FRACTURE RISK COMMUNICATION TOOL
IOF and BHOF have developed a clear and simple tool aiming to help primary care providers initiate a dialogue with their patients about osteoporosis and fracture risk. It is intended to be used during medical consultations to improve patients’ understanding of their condition and provide them with essential information about anti-osteoporosis medications and their relative risks and benefits.
IOF OSTEOPOROSIS RISK CHECK
The IOF Osteoporosis Risk Check is now available online in 34 languages. This quick and easy-to-use online questionnaire will help you recognize whether you have any key osteoporosis risk factors which indicate the need for testing.
